Total hip replacement involves the removal of the head of the femur (thigh bone), as well as the removal of the surface layer of its socket in the pelvis. These are then replaced. The head of the femur is replaced with a metallic ball and stem, which fits into the canal of the femur. The socket is replaced with a combination of plastic, metal, or ceramic. There are many different shapes, sizes, and designs of artificial hips. For the most part, these are composed of either chrome cobalt or titanium or sometimes ceramic. Custom-made components are also being used by some surgeons to improve the fit in the femur.
Your surgeon will discuss with you what is best in your particular case.
