Dr. Mike Walsh was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. After finishing undergraduate studies at Georgia Tech, Dr. Walsh attended Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He served as a surgical intern and orthopaedic resident at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Dr. Walsh completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship in 1976 at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. The Hughston Clinic is home not only to one of the first Sports Medicine Fellowships ever established, but also to the first fully dedicated Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Hospital in the nation. Dr. Jack Hughston, founder of the clinic, stands as one of the fathers of sports medicine in this country. Through Dr. Hughston's pioneering efforts, the clinic has grown into a national referral center for many elite athletes, as well as a resource for local high school, college and recreational sports participants. Dr. Walsh is proud to be an alumnus of this prestigious program.
In 1980, Dr. Walsh came to Omaha to start the Sports Medicine Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He directed that program until 1990 when he became one of the original partners in the Sports Medicine Center, a comprehensive sports injury clinic next to the Prairie Life Center near 132nd and Center Streets. The partners in that practice ultimately became the nucleus of the current group, OrthoWest, P.C. Dr. Walsh has also been team orthopaedic surgeon for all of the teams at the University of Nebraska-Omaha since 1980.
Dr. Walsh has been board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since 1977. An active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, he has served on numerous committees and was the author of "Prevention and Treatment of Little League Baseball and Softball Injuries," a national safety course developed for Little League Baseball, Inc., by the Society. Dr. Walsh has also been a member of the International Knee Society and editorial board member for the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the nation's leading sports medicine journal.
Dr. Walsh's interests include disorders of the knee as well as athletic injuries to other parts of the body. Most of his surgical activity is focused on arthroscopic surgery, especially in the knee. He also lectures extensively on a local, regional, and national level on various orthopaedic and sports medicine topics.
