Medications to Discontinue

Below is a list of prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, herbals, and substances that should be discontinued prior to any surgical procedure. Continue taking your regular medications that are not on this list. If you are taking a medication that appears on this list and don't know if you should stop, contact the doctor who prescribed the medication.

• Discontinue use of aspirin, aspirin-containing medication, and anti-inflammatory medication (such as Advil, Motrin, or Naproxen). These medications may cause increased bleeding during your procedure.
• If you are taking Coumadin, you will need special instructions from the physician who prescribed the medication.
• Discontinue use of Plavix, Aggrenox, Pletal, Effient, and omega-3 vitamins (such as fish oil, flax seed, and vitamin E).
• Discontinue use of all herbal supplements.
